On April 15, Atlantic Works Gallery held a Third Thursday Reception

for Kasia Bytnerowicz's "Portraits."

There was a solid turnout of friends,

family

and the people who sat (or stood) for the portraits!

Once again an interesting dynamic occured where many of the sitters were among the visitors to the reception. Very neat!

Opening Reception for "Portraits by Kasia Bytnerowicz."
On Thursday, April 8, Atlantic Works Gallery held an opening reception for an exhibition of portraits by gallery member Kasia Bytnerowicz.

There was a solid turnout to view the six new portaits by Kasia.

Many of the sitters for the portaits were at the event, including Zinc the dog.

It was sorta fun connecting the sitters with their portraits.

The uncluttered installation gave each work an appropriate amount of breathing room, which in turn gave the viewers a more focused engagement with the works.

As a group, these works solidly position Kasia as a talented portrait painter capable of depicting humans and animals in a variety of interesting compositions.

Opening Reception for "Incorporating Pattern: New Work by Lola Baltzell, Karen Kemp and Maureen O'Connor."

On March 4, Atlantic Works Gallery held an opening reception

for an exhibition of new works by (left to right) Maureen O'Connor, Lola Baltzell and Karen Kemp.

Each work in the show

utilized pattern

as a compositional device and as a relational device.

The thoughtful and at times exuberant presence of each work

was amplified by the capable guitar work of Max Cohen.

The attention to detail and patterning within each work made for a quiet and uplifting viewing experience.

Atlantic Works Gallery is pleased to present a selection of works by our five new members.

The inclusion of these artists in the Atlantic Works' membership underscores the gallery's commitment to contemporary artwork of visual and conceptual merit.

Cool Third Thursday Extravaganza!

On January 21, Atlantic Works Gallery held a Third Thursday reception for it's current exhibition "Cool."

The evening got rolling with the gallery's second annual Post HolidayYankee Swap. Visitors were encouraged to bring a cheap gift and participate.

There was plenty of anticipation for the opening of the gifts which were, if you think about it, not wanted by their original owners!

The game had its share of short-term victories,

goofy interludes

and moments of curiosity and awe...

The Swap was followed by Bo Petran's annual "Burning Manhood" spectacle: a performative and celebratory

ritual of fire,

rebirth

and fear of being visited by the Boston Fire Department!

All in all, a very "Cool" event.

Opening Reception for "COOL"

That's pretty "COOL"...

On Friday, January 8, Atlantic Works Gallery kicked off its month of "COOL" with a $100 art exhibition.

Gallery artists and their friends generously donated artwork for the fund raising event.

Shrewd guests scored under priced works from Boston's best up and coming artists.

The evening was a mix of fine art

fine wine

and fine times.

There was something

for everyone.

Lots more COOL stuff is happening at Atlantic Works Gallery this January!

On Third Thursday (January 21, 6-9pm), there is a Yankee Swap at 6:30 pm. If you would like to participate, please bring a wrapped gift with a maximum value of $15. Be cheap! Be funny!

The Yankee Swap is followed by an Atlantic Work's endearing and bizarre performance/ritual known as the Burning Manhood.

Shameless plug: The gallery has made up a 2010 wall calendar of last year's Burning Manhood event. It is available for $15.

12/17/09 Third Thursday Event for "You're Welcome"

On Thursday, December 17, Atlantic Works Gallery held a Third Thursday Reception for Carmen Sasso's exhibition entitled "You're Welcome."

There was a very impressive turnout for this event which happened to take place on the first REALLY COLD night of the season.

(For those of you unfamiliar with the gallery, Atlantic Works is perched on the wind-scoured side of Boston Harbor.)

Thankfully, many many of the colors in Carmen's works are hot primaries.

Bold value and temperature contrasts keep your eye and body moving.

An optimistic (opti-mystic!) visual intensity permeated and warmed the stark white gallery walls

as two sculptures looked on.

Opening Reception for "You're Welcome,"

On Thursday, December 3, Atlantic Works Gallery held an opening reception for "You're Welcome," a solo exhibition of new work by Carmen Sasso (above right).

The bold, exuberant and physically substantial works resonated

with a sizable audience of gallery friends, fellow artists

and first time visitors.

Viewers were presented with a dynamic, well -placed arrangement of formal

and symbolic works

which appeared to erupt from the gallery's pristine walls.

On December 17, 2009, Atlantic Works Gallery is hosting a Third Thursday reception for the artist from 6-9 pm.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Corpus Callosum"

"Corpus Callosum"

My exhibition of "Corpus Callosum" at Atlantic Works Gallery is drawing to a close.

Indeed, pre-hanging preparations for this exhibition were time and labor intensive.

The 500 slide sheets, which hold 20 drawings each, were pre-mounted on paper panels with 1,000 homemade hinges and 2,000 pieces of tape.

When all was said and done, the turnout to the opening reception, gallery hours and Third Thursday event was moderate, but the overall experience was positive in several ways.

First of all, I got to see the work installed in its entirety. This might sound funny, but the work is so big that I never saw it on the wall at one time and in one place prior to this exhibition.

Check out this video clip to get an idea of the size of the piece.

Secondly, I got a lot of encouraging feedback from artist peers and insight from some sensitive viewers who took more than 30 minutes crawling through the work.

It's true that a work of this scale and visual density demands a lot from the viewer. Visual connections and relationships emerge slowly and unexpectedly.

This video clip is an up close view of the work.

One perceptive viewer pointed out that the pencil didn't appear to leave the paper during the execution of many of the drawings.

Others, through asking questions about the work, inadvertently brought me back to a period in my life when I was consistently up and drawing well before the sunrise...

"Corpus Callosum" Opening...

Opening Reception for "Corpus Callosum"

On Thursday, November 5, Atlantic Works Gallery hosted an opening reception for "Corpus Callosum," a 10,000 drawing wall piece by Michael St.Germain.

Family, friends, and others came by

to check out 10,000 matchbook-sized drawings (www.mikesartnook.blogspot.com).

The drawings were presented in 500 (20-pocket) slide storage pages.

These pages, in turn, were affixed to 84 panels. The work literally filled the whole gallery.

Some people chose to sit and get up close and personal with the work.

Others took it in the drawings sequentially.

As always, guests gathered to talk,

share a drink

and have a few laughs.

Special Thanks to our gallery installer George Kougeas for a very long, precise and elegant installation.

Special Thanks also to BeeBee Horowitz at the Toy Box at the Tisbury Marketplace in Vineyard Haven (Martha's Vineyard) for kindly offering a very generous discount on letters for signage.

Third Thursday: Phallic Confessions and Flaccid Truths...

On Thursday, October 15, Atlantic Works Gallery held a Third Thursday Reception for Phallic Confessions and Flaccid Truths, a provocative and thought-provoking exhibition by gallery members Samantha Marder and Laura Torres.

The event was casual, low- key

and chock-full-of laughs!

This was a welcome contrast to some of the raucous openings we have had recently!

Several gallery members were present and this was a nice opportunity to get visitors acquainted with our unique and awesome space which just happens to have some of the best visual arts programming in Boston!

Third Thursday for "Make Believe"

On Thursday, September 17, Atlantic Works Gallery hosted a Third Thursday reception for its September show Make Believe.

This exhibit by Atlantic Works members Elizabeth Hathaway and

Joan Ryan positions both artists

as aesthetic activists intent on using using their abilities to call attention to and urge action towards reducing the injustices perpetrated against women and children in Darfur.

To emphasize and expand upon their perspectives, Physicians for Human Rights were invited to present a poignant, vivid and sobering slide show. You could almost hear a pin drop...

That being said, a lot of discussion both serious

and not so serious transpired during the evening.

This mixing together of different perspectives, exposure to new aesthetic possibilities and encounters with overlooked realities makes Atlantic Works a great venue.

Opening Reception: Make Believe

On Saturday, September 5, Atlantic Works Gallery held an opening reception for its current show: Make Believe.

Make Believe is a painting-centric, multimedia response by Elizabeth Hathaway and Joan Ryan to the tragedy of Darfur.

The show calls attention to the sexual abuse of Darfuri women in the refugee camps and urges the viewer to give consideration to the overlooked child victims of the conflict.

As part of the show, Cambridge-based Physicians for Human Rights is exhibiting a series of photographs which documents the displaced Darfuri women and children residing in refuge camps in eastern Chad.

Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon stopped by to check out the show and talk with guests.

There was an eclectic turnout of building artists,

and invited guests.

Third Thursday: The Biennial Project's inaugural Boston Biennial.

On August 20, Atlantic Works Gallery hosted a Third Thursday reception for the Biennial Project's inaugural Boston Biennial.

For this event, a call was put out to artists interested in erecting national pavilions (by country or state of mind) in the gravel patio/sculpture garden behind 80 Border Street.

Czech artists Sonia Domkarova and Bo Petran responded to the call with a farmer's market tent

loaded with Czech art magazines and catalogs. Cold Czech beer was there for the taking as long as you honored the artists request to throw the empty bottles on the ground inside of the tent.

The cool (not overly low tide) harbor air was quite welcome, and the patio became something of a collective undefined studio session!

Meanwhile upstairs in the gallery...

A video screening by Biennial Project member Charlene Liska engaged and entertained the the audience with a voyeuristic view of the thoughts and aspirations of Boston Biennial participants.

Opening Reception: the Biennial Project's inaugural Boston Biennial.

On Thursday, August 6, Atlantic Works Gallery held an opening reception for its August show: the Biennial Project's inaugural Boston Biennial.

This show is a curatorial project of gallery members Anna Salmeron, Eric Hess, Charlene Liska and Laura Rollins who collaborate on a conceptual undertaking called the Biennial Project.

The idea for this show was for the Biennial Project (www.biennialproject.com) to get further enmeshed in the discourse of biennials by actually holding one. To that end, a call for entries was put out and approximately seventy-five artists were selected by conceptual/hybrid curator Clea Saraholi to exhibit at Atlantic Works Gallery.

There was a spectacular turnout for this event which,

arguably more than any venue in the greater Boston/ NE area,

presents a true panorama of what's currently happening in artists studios.

Third Thursday: July 16,2009 ...

On July 16, Atlantic Works Gallery held a reception for its current member group show: A Little Help From Our Friends.

Participating gallery artists were instructed to invite a friend or relative to either exhibit a work (next to their own) or to collaborate on a piece.

There was quite an eclectic turnout...

Lots of new visitors came to the gallery in great part due to the generosity of the East Boston Cultural Center (http://www.80borderstreet.org/) which sent guests from their event to ours.

One of those guests was Mayor Menino!

The Mayor was a gracious guest and posed for photos with many of the gallery artists. Here he is with Maureen O'Connor...

A Little Help From My Friends...

On Wednesday, July 8, Atlantic Works Gallery hosted an opening reception for its July group show A Little Help From My Friends.

Each of the gallery's 27 members was encouraged to invite a friend, family member or significant other to exhibit a work of art next to their own.

That's my son and I in front of our work....

A sort of visual cocktail party ensued with over 40 works quietly relating to

and engaging with familiar and unknown neighbors alike.

At the start of the reception, there was plenty of room to view individual works,

but that changed as the gallery filled up.

A good time was had by all.

There was a good turnout...

The party animals

were out in full force,

but they blended in just fine with

Karen's landscapes and

Maureen's still lifes.

Opening Reception for Waterworks...

Waterworks Reception

On Thursday, June 4, a show of new paintings and prints by Karen Kemp and Maureen O'Connor opened at Atlantic Works Gallery.

It was a splendid evening on the waterfront with views through the open windows complementing the theme of the show.

Visitors enjoyed wine and a light snacks as they gathered amidst representational works

by Karen Kemp (above) and Maureen O'Connor (below) sharing split-horizontal compositions,

imagery literally and conceptually related to water and forms revealed by a primary light source.

The light emanating from each of the sensitively rendered paintings really came alive in the improved overhead gallery lighting.

Third Thursday: Responding to Darkness

On May 21, Atlantic Works Gallery held a Third Thursday Event for its current exhibition Responding to Darkness.

Responding to Darkness is a site-specific installation by Richard Dorff,

Bo Petran (above) and Michael St.Germain (below).

As a special attraction for the event,

Atlantic Works artist Sonia Domkarova did a dance-performance inside of Bo Petran's portion of the installation.

During the evening, visitors had a chance to cool off in the harbor breeze and view East Boston's First Annual Sculpture, Installation and Outdoor Art Competition, conveniently located behind the building.

Visitors voted for their faves and G. Frost's rebar Moose took first prize.

Brooke Mullins Doherty's ceramic installation "Corpus" took second

and Anna Salmeron's Nest took third.

April 16 "Double Fantasy" Third Thursday Event

On Thursday, April 16, Atlantic Works Gallery hosted a Third Thursday reception for its current exhibition "Double Fantasy".

Third Thursdays are always great events to attend. They are free, open to the public and happen on the third Thursday of each and every month (usually from 6-9pm).

The best part of Third Thursday is that you never know who will show up and you never know what they'll do when they arrive!

Third Thursdays are a great opportunity to meet up and coming artists before they become famous and pretend they never met you!
